Another Speaker Announced: Dr. Deepak Chopra

DEEPAK CHOPRADr. Deepak Chopra has just been confirmed to the lineup of speakers for this year’s The Atlantic Meets the Pacific.

Trained in internal medicine and endocrinology, Chopra is also the author of over 65 books, many reaching the New York Times Bestsellers list. For those who attended the first The Atlantic Meets the Pacific, one might remember Chopra’s talk about the relationship between science and spirituality, in his discussion of the book he co-wrote with Leonard Mlodinow, titled “The War of the Worldviews: Science vs. Spirituality.”

Chopra was born in New Delhi and graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He immigrated to America in 1968 and in 1973, earned his license to practice medicine in the state of Massachusetts. Chopra was once the chief of staff at the New England Memorial Hospital and taught at the medical schools of Tufts University, Boston University, and Harvard University.

Then in 1985, Chopra was invited to study Ayurveda by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi which began Chopra’s career in alternative medicine. Chopra left his positions in the traditional medical field and soon became the founding president of the American Association of Ayuvedic Medicine and medical director of Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center for Stress Management and Behavioral Medicine before he was named “Dhanvantari (Lord of Immortality), the keeper of perfect health for the world” by the Maharishi.

In 1996, Chopra founded the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Southern California with neurologist David Simon, with a practice that combines western and ancient wellness regimens focusing on maintaining a healthy balance within mind and body. According to the Chopra Center’s website, “The Chopra Center’s mission is to serve as the global source for balance, healing, transformation, and the expansion of awareness.”

In addition to his continued involvement with the Chopra Center, Chopra is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and a senior scientist at the Gallup Organization.

The Atlantic Meets the Pacific, presented by UC San Diego Extension and The Atlantic Magazine, will take place on October 2nd through 4th at Scripps Seaside Forum and Calit2 in La Jolla, California. For more information on registration and speakers like Chopra, check
